The root of all evil

Usually, we blame the root of an event, the first mover that put things into movement.

But is this really reasonable? Shouldn’t we blame the process, the transformations that a thing went through to achieve such end?

Why do we put so much emphasis on the roots, on the pioneers, on the beginnings? If we put it commonsensically (ugh, mr beliasis speaking here), are the ingredients really more important than the cooking process?
